Jean-Louis Trintignant plays a french contract assassin hired by a Los Angeles crime family, ostensibly to perform a hit on some other mafia target. But simultaneously, as he arrives to do his job, a slaying occurs inside the household of the mob boss supposed to employ him. Suspicion is deliberately cast against Trintignant from within that very family. From that moment on, Trintignant is on the run from the police, and the minions of two different mob families. What makes his escape hazardous is that the real murderer shares all the information known about him to aid in his capture and death.
This version is longer and uses alternate scenes and footage.
It’s very different from the American edit.
We resynced the film using the original English audio track.
The print we had was dubbed in French.
Because this version was only meant to be shown in France
some of Jean-Louis Trintignant scenes were re-shot with him
speaking French . So sometimes the english audio does not match up with his mouth movements. This happens occasionally through the film. I’m guessing they did re-shoots so when this was shown in France it wouldn’t look so strange (A french actor speaking english being dubbed in french).
There are a few scenes that were never dubbed in English.
So English subtitles will display at the bottom of your screen
during these scenes. ANAMORPHIC WIDESCREEN (Remastered)

Nico Icon (Music Documentary) - 1995 - NTSC [ Susanne Ofteringer]
A striking and harrowing documentary about fame, drugs, pop culture, and celebrity, Nico Icon casts a harsh light on the underground world of pop art and music in the 1960s and 1970s through the prism of a girl who lived too hard and died too young. The German-born Nico is presented as someone who never fit in, no matter what she was doing, from her career as a fashion model in the 1950s (including an appearance in Federico Fellini’s La Dolce Vita) to her tenure in the 1960s as one of the cast of characters in artist Andy Warhol’s “Factory” to her stint as a backup singer for Lou Reed and the Velvet Underground. Most of the film concentrates on her sordid relationship with her son with French actor Alain Delon and her decline into heroin addiction and obscurity. This visually innovative and challenging documentary doesn’t judge her but uses her life to illustrate the excesses of the world around her. Nico Icon will be a revelation for those interested in the world it depicts.

In this thriller, an ambassador’s wife (Edwige French) suspects that one of the men closest to her is a murderer. A cult favorite among fans of Italian horror, this 1970 film doesn’t stint in its use of graphic violence and nudity, a prime example of the giallo genre that fashioned itself after lurid Italian pulp novels. Despite those elements, the movie carries a certain air of sophistication. Conchita Airoldi co-stars. Sergio Martino directs.

Funeral Parade of Roses - 1969 - NTSC - Toshio Matsumoto (JP)
Stanley Kubrik has said that his visual and sonic ideas for “A Clockwork Orange” were inspired by this film.
Funeral Parade of Roses comes to us from a moment when cinema set itself to test, and even eradicate, the boundaries between fiction and reality, desire and experience; consequently, the film shares a kinship with such other 1969 works as Masahiro Shinoda’s Double Suicide and Ingmar Bergman’s A Passion [The Passion of Anna]. Yet Matsumoto achieves a zig-zag modulation between pathos and hilarity that makes his picture utterly unique: a filmic howl in the face of social, moral, and artistic convention.

Shizuka’s relationship to Denzo provides her with no sexual satisfaction, while Shizuo’s relations with Yumiko are similarly unsatisfactory. Mother and son are seen to share the most profound erotic compulsion toward each other, which manifests itself first in a series of flashbacks. Shizuo remembers bathing with his mother; playing by a stream with friends when his mother calls him from a bridge; following his mother to the small house where she carries on her liaison with Denzo (thus telling us that this affair began before his father’s death from tuberculosis); his parents kissing in his father’s hospital bed. Shizuka remembers many of these scenes as well, in addition to her memory of her husband’s final moments; He lay in bed as she removed her clothes give him one final kiss before he died . The erotic compulsion felt by mother and son climaxes when Shizuo goes into his mother’s bedroom carrying a bottle of sleeping pills and talks to her of shinju, lovers’ suicide. He lays his head on her breast; she throws her head back in a swoon of ecstasy, the camera rocking back and forth like a pendulum. A fade to black hides the next activity (including the possibility of incest and then double suicide). The next morning we see that mother and son did not commit suicide as Shizuka and Denzo take a drive to the country in his car. The car is discovered later, crashed into a tree, Denzo dead at the wheel. Shizuka has drowned in the lake, her shoes and umbrella floating on the surface of the water. Shizuo, meanwhile, following the (implied) incest with his mother, has drawn closer to Yumiko. The film’s final shot shows Shizuo clinging tight to Yumiko as they search for Shizuka’s body.

This is a film you don’t want to miss!!!
In fact, it’s considered by some critics to be one of the greatest spaghetti westerns ever. A seasoned gunfighter teaches a young orphan the ways of the gun. As fate would have it though, they eventually wind up in a showdown with each other at the film’s rousing climax–the crafty teacher vs. the strong-headed student.
Directed by Euro-western master, Tonino Valerii.
Even though this title is remastered and far superior image wise to the Wild East DVD, there is a small 2min scene between Scott and the old man that is not present in this version.

The Darien Gap - 1996 - NTSC - [Brad Anderson] (USA)
Lyn Vaus (Lyn Vaus playing himself) sits on a small bench alongside Boston’s lovely Charles River, takes a slug of Jim Beam, a long drag from his Lucky Strike and casts his jaundiced eye upon the world:
I don’t want to be told I have to commit to anything. I don’t think anyone I know wants that dictated to them. I think everyone I know is looking for something to be committed to. But that word “commitment” – I keep seeing mental institutions. I mean, it is a big word. It’s got a lot of syllables. It has that hard kind of sound at the end of it, like a door slamming – “commit-MENT!”…
So begins the shaggy dog tale The Darien Gap, a deeply personal, richly entertaining account of one man’s search for true love…and giant sloths.
Lyn is broke, homeless, alone – eager to run away from his troubled past and start anew. His sole possession, a video camera, has become his salvation. Or so he thinks. With it he hopes to hitch down the Pan-American Highway to Argentina where he has learned there exists a rare creature, a legendary creature that is so reclusive, so exotic, so… slow, that it surely must have been created for him and him alone to find – the South American Giant Sloth. Lyn figures he can safely get some footage of this thing with his camera, sell it to some tabloid, make a little nest egg for himself…
When Lyn learns about the Darien Gap, a treacherous swamp in Panama that blocks the highway and thereby his escape route to paradise, he is unfazed. He’s gotten over bigger obstacles before, hasn’t he? He’s always been a survivor – just like his father. “When things get shitty, walk away,” his father used to say. And so he will. Just like his father before him. What could possibly stop him running now?

10,000 Dollars Blood Money DVD (Remastered)- 1967 - NTSC -[Romolo Guerrieri] (IT)
CULTCINE EXCLUSIVE
Django (Gianni Garko) is a bounty killer, and a particularly ruthless and mercenary one at that. He is only interested in the money and he always brings his men in dead. Recently released convict Manuel Vasquez (Claudio Camaso) raises his interest as he goes on a crime spree but, in a show of extreme cynicism, Django opts to wait before going after him as he believes he will commit more crimes and therefore be worth more money if given a little more time. At the story’s outset Vasquez is worth only $3,000. Django sets his target at $10,000. Then, and only then, will he make his move. This price is eventually reached after Vasquez kidnaps the daughter of local rancher Mendoza and the old patron offers to double the $5000 reward being offered by the state. This comes at the same time that Django is on the verge of quitting the profession and leaving with the lovely saloon owner Mijanou (Loredana Nusciak). He succumbs to his greed and, despite her telling him she will be gone in six days, he leaves her in search of Vasquez. After a number of twists during which Django teams up with Vasquez in pursuit of even more money, the bounty killer and prey have their final and inevitable showdown in a desolate and windswept ghost town.

(Disc 1) Akitsu Springs [Akitsu onsen]- 1962 – color 16×9
A haunting tale of unrequited love, The Affair at Akitsu is one of the most beloved Japanese melodramas of the postwar studio era. Yoshida’s first adapted screenplay uses the vivid background of war-torn Japan to suggest its archetypal characters of the spirited, selfless woman – mesmerizingly embodied by Mariko Okada – and the cynical intellectual drawn to her beauty as twin figures for the hope and resignation simultaneously born of Japan’s inevitable defeat. A deeply affecting and exquisitely beautiful film, Yoshida and Okada’s first collaboration announced the abiding interest in resilient heroines and pointedly feminist ideas that would remain a constant across the many films made throughout their long partnership.
This marks Yoshishige Yoshida’s first collaboration with his future wife, legendary Japanese actress ‘Mariko Okada’.
(Disc 2) 18 Roughs – [Arashi o yobu juhachi-nin] (1963) B/W 16×9
The last of Yoshida’s taiyozoku films focuses on a gang of proletariat ruffians enraged with a world that offers them no means to advance except though violence. Pitted against the destructive gang is an idealistic youth determined to stop them from wrecking his town—and to protect the young waitress he has come to love. Exemplary of the Shochiku New Wave is the film’s use of stark black and white widescreen cinematography as a means to deliberately aestheticize and distanciate its sordid, violent story and underscore the urgent social problem message contained within it. “Laborers considered as ‘things’ that simply, not even respected as workers. The absurdity of their presence, and of us who allow this state of affairs. It seemed opportune to me to describe this without offering any clear explanations. A critical essay addressed to the social cinema of the time.”
(Disc 3) Escape from Japan [Nihon dasshutsu] (1964) Color 16×9
Yoshida’s last film with Shochiku.
It’s the story of a roadie whose ambition is to migrate to America and study singing, an examination of the Americanized youth of the 1960s who longed for the United States, their idealized land of riches and freedom.

(Disc 1) Good For Nothing [Rokudenashi]- 1960 – B/W 16×9
Yoshida was propelled into the forefront of Shochiku’s directorial ranks by his energetic first feature, a brisk and angry entry in the studio’s highly popular cycle of taiyozoku films which focused, for the most part, on frustrated juvenile delinquents. Yoshida’s original script is centered on a group of listless middle-class high school students whose fantasies of sex and violence exert an unhealthy hold upon their imagination. The stakes of the boys’ depraved playacting rise dangerously, spiraling into a deadly roulette of crime and betrayal. A stylistically assured and striking debut film with overt nods to early Godard, Good for Nothing’s dynamic black and white cinematography announced the non-conventional mise-en-scène and fluid, expressive camera movement which would become an important signature of Yoshida’s later films.
(Disc 2) Blood is Dry [Chi wa kawaiteru](1960) B/W 16×9
Yoshida’s second Shochiku assignment turned away from the studio’s dominant focus on troubled youth and generational conflict in order to paint a darker and more despairing portrait of society in a state of moral collapse. Taking sharp aim at Japan’s harshly competitive corporate culture, Blood Thirsty follows a hapless salaryman whose desperate gesture to prevent the mass layoff of his colleagues is ruthlessly and absurdly exploited by his company for a deeply ironic advertising campaign. Based on one of Yoshida’s original stories, Blood Thirsty is a formally daring and edgy film whose withering critique of corporate capitalism and the alienation of the working force remains particularly urgent today.
(Disc 3) Bitter End to a Sweet Night (1961) B/W 16×9
Yoshida’s third film is the story Jiro is a sales clerk at a department store.
He’s pretty dedicated and goes on doing his daily duties diligently until he meets Harumi (Teruyo Yamagami) a waitress in a small hole in a wall restaurant. Jiro frequents a bar that’s run by Soko (Michiko Saga) the daughter of the owner of the department store he works in. Soko is looking for a charismatic hostess to work at her bar, and Jiro out of kindness introduces Harumi to Soko. Harumi comes to shack with Jiro but she won’t let him touch her. She’s just free loading off of him until she meets Hondo (Osamu Takizawa) a wealthy owner of a chemical plant. Hondo offers her a place to live in an apartment. Jiro also meets Oka (Takamaru Sasaki), also a chemical plant owner who’s business is going downhill. He meets his widowed daughter Masae (Hiroko Sugita). Now circulating among the rich set, Jiro feels inferior about his status and decides to climb up the social ladder by going to bed first with Masae, and then Soko, but he still has something going with Harumi.

Sartana kills them all (Remastered)- 1971 - NTSC - [Rafael Romero Marchent] (IT)
This film starring Gianni Garko has a ‘Sartana’ in its name, even though it has little to nothing to do with the popular “Sartana” series that Garko is most famous for.
Sartana and Mike are the terror of the Green City country – and the best of friends. Together with Fred and Rocky Burton they pull off a very rewarding bank robbery. But, sad to say, they get caught and languish under lock and key in Sheriff Laughton’s jailhouse. Sartana isn’t the man to put up for long with such a setback and he breaks out, leaving Mike behind. Mike, too, is soon free thanks to the abetment of Deputy Sheriff Smitty – a reasonably minded fellow. As a matter of course they end up back in Sartana’s company to rendezvous with Rocky Morgan in Piedra Negras. Here they discover that their booty is in Fred’s hands – and he has lit out on the stage. But someone else is wise to what’s afoot – Richard Kirby and his sons. Mercilessly killing all the passengers, including Fred, they take over the stagecoach and the loot. In the meantime, Mike, Santana and Maria, a girl who has attached herself to them, shake off Deputy Smitty and ride to Denver to wait for the Kirby gang.

Throw Away Your Books, Let's Go into the Street - 1971 - NTSC - [Shuji Terayama] (JP)
Terayama’s first feature film is a scream for contestation, so radical in its ideology, narration, mode of expression, and even in its choice of music, that it seems to anticipate the punk movement by a few years. The opening shot shows an empty box ring, thus setting the scene for an painful confrontation with the demons of the director’s past, namely the oppressing role of family and the passing of time, destroyers of all hopes and dreams of genuine freedom for a young man running from disillusion to disenchantment. This work is also a means for him to express his position with regards to the crushing American presence in the country and the nation’s passivity and retrograde politics inherited from the 1945 defeat.

Coup D'État - 1973 - NTSC - [Yoshishige Yoshida]
Adapting a revolutionary approach to narrative filmmaking like his contemporary Ôshima Nagisa, Yoshida refuses to tell Kitas story through the linearity that has functioned in Japanese cinema as a thinly veiled substitute for the benshi, the live commentator who explained the plot to silent-film audiences in Japan. During the silent era, the benshi, each with the embellishments reflecting his own personal style, would duplicate in words the action of the film. Then came the traditional, didactic historical film, full of explanations conveyed through subtitles or voice-over narration. This is the style employed by Horikawa and other directors of the pedestrian historical film. The audience, spoon-fed, is prevented from actively participating in the experience of the film.

The Wax Mask (Maschera Di Cera) - 1997 - NTSC - [ Sergio Stivaletti] (IT)
Paris, 1900. As a little girl, Sonia witnesses the slaughter of her parents by a mysterious man with a steel arm. Years later in Rome, she is hired as a dressmaker at a wax museum owned by Volkoff, a sinister artist who recreates perfect replicas of famous crime scenes. A series of strange deaths in the area has led a young journalist, Andrea, to investigate the mysterious vaults of the museum. Curiously, the workshop in which Volkoff’s wax statues are created seems more like a scientific laboratory than a sculptor’s den. Andrea and Sonia are soon plunged into a nightmare as they both learn the secret behind Volkoff’s statues and the connection he bears to the steel-armed murderer of Sonia’s parents.
Produced by Italian horror master Dario Argento (Suspiria, Deep Red), this blood-chilling remake of the classic House Of Wax was to have been directed by the late Lucio Fulci (Zombie, The Beyond), who died shortly before production began. Using Fulci’s script, adapted from an original story Argento, makeup and special effects master Sergio Stivaletti instead makes an auspicious directorial debut, combining Gothic atmosphere with modern-day mechanical and makeup effects. Wax Mask (Maschera Di Cera) is a gory shocker that puts a new twist on the tale of the spooky wax museum.

Pulgasari - 1985 - NTSC - [Shin Sang-ok] (KR)
Pulgasari (or Pulgasary) is a North Korean-Japanese co-produced feature film produced in 1985, a giant-monster film similar to the Japanese Godzilla. It was produced by South Korean director Shin Sang-ok, who had been kidnapped in 1978 by North Korean intelligence on the orders of Kim Jong-il, son of the then ruling Kim Il-sung.Teruyoshi Nakano and staff from Japan’s Toho company, which is responsible for the Godzilla series, participated in creating the film’s special effects. Kenpachiro Satsuma—then-current man in the “Godzilla” suit—played Pulgasari, and when the film was released in Japan in 1998, he was quoted as saying he preferred Pulgasari to the CGI American Godzilla (1998).The film is about a doll made of rice by a prisoner, which on coming into contact with blood, grows to become a giant metal-eating monster. Jonathan Ross stated that the film is intended to be a propaganda metaphor for the effects of unchecked capitalism and the power of the collective.Full ScreenKorean Audio / English Subtitles![]()

Hell-bent on avenging herself on every man who makes a play for her, she takes advantage of her situation to wreak bloody vengeance… (Much like a spider.)
Garish and perverse and gleefully proud of it, and striking in its linking of sexuality and violence, the film is also infused with wonderful black humour and a visual style and beauty that is astonishing. Adapted by Kaneto Shindo from the acclaimed 1910 short story by Junichiro Tanizaki. Starring Masumura regular Ayako Wakao (RED ANGEL, MANJI). A dazzling tale of love, lust and the extremes of desire, this is another twisted masterpiece from the director of Blind Beast, Manji and Red Angel.

Sitcom - 1998 - NTSC - [François Ozon] (FR)
Playing like a combination of Todd Solondz, John Waters, and a dysfunctional and incestuous generic television sitcom, director François Ozon’s blacker than night psychological family comedy touches on many aspects that would frighten off most casual viewers on concept alone. From the opening scene of a father gunning down his family (albeit experienced audibly while the camera remains fixed on an external shot of the exceedingly proper and mundane suburban home) to mother/son sex, and even moments that border on bestiality, Sitcom gleefully and unapologetically attempts to dismantle the denial-prone status quo while constantly dwelling on self-conscious shock tactics and riffs on such nuclear family stereotypes as the indifferent father and the obsessively proper mother figure. And while Ozon’s tactics hit the marks at times early on, as the film grows increasingly debaucherous it becomes more and more difficult to assess the method to the suburban nightmare madness the film portrays. By the time the surreal climax involving one of the human characters’ literal transformation into the catalyst that set the opening scene’s tragedy into motion rolls around, it feels uncharacteristically out of place and forced within the admittedly already absurd context of the previous 70 minutes. As repulsive as some of the more sordid details of the deteriorating family values may be, the majority of the film keeps the viewer involved and interested until the apparent lack of direction and outcome sends it careening out of control and spiraling into a nonsensical conclusion. Had Ozon anchored himself to reality, so to speak, he may have crafted a not altogether flawless, but effective comment on the banality of the sugar-coated denial that makes up the majority of television sitcoms and its disturbing transcendence into real life. As it stands however, the film is effective and entertaining for the most part, though its ambiguously confusing ending distills the jarring impact that this otherwise effective satire may have held.

Almost Human - 1974 - NTSC - [Umberto Lenzi] (IT)
This melodramatic crime film concerns a petty thief named Julio (Tomas Milian) who kidnaps pretty Mary Lou (Laura Belli), the daughter of his girlfriend’s rich employer, and holds her for ransom. Much of the film features Julio’s hysterical populist rants targeting the wealthy elite, whom he both envies and detests. When the bound Mary Lou mocks him, Julio’s anger leads to a bloody gunfight in which nearly everyone dies. Eventually, Police Inspector Walter Grandi (Henry Silva) turns vigilante and guns down the “human trash” on a pile of garbage. Reminiscent of everything from the Dirty Harry series to the Patty Hearst kidnapping, Lenzi’s preposterous film is most memorable for its overly ripe dialogue and an outlandish party scene in which Milian forces a balding, craven businessman to service him at gunpoint.

The Youth Killer - 1976 - NTSC - [Kazuhiko Hasegawa] (JP)
Hasegawa Kazuhiko has only directed two films in the last thirty years. But in Hasegawa’s case, that is enough to put him in the league of Japan’s finest filmmakers. Grappling controversial topics and delivering with a terrifying intensity, Hasegawa’s films are impossible to forget. His 1979 cult film The Man Who Stole the Sun hit Japanese cinema much like the bomb that its troubled protagonist constructed, while his masterful 1976 debut Seishun no Satsujinsha tells a haunting story of bloody patricide. Adapted from a Nakagami Kenji novel which was itself based on a true story, Seishun no Satsujinsha (a.k.a. Young Murderer) takes the familiar problems of youth apathy, generation conflict, and domestic violence to a shocking conclusion. Hasegawa cuts no corners with the realistic, emotionally brutal scenes of murder, and Mizutani Yutaka and Ichihara Etsuko both give amazing performances.
One morning Jun (Mizutani Yutaka) gets into an angry argument with his father (Uchida Ryohei) over his girlfriend (Harada Mieko) whom his father disapproves of. In a fit of bloody rage, Jun kills his father. He decides to turn himself into the police, but his mother (Ichihara Etsuko) stops him. Eerily calm after the shock, she suggests that they dispose of the body, and then move to another place where no one will know them. When Jun moves the body out of the house, his mother suddenly changes moods again and points a knife at him.

Casper is an unnamed character living the big life. His gas money consists of crisp hundreds and he has friends of all shapes and sizes. His love appears in his dreams similar to a pseudo-Nowhere James Duval masturbation fantasy.
Justin Pierce plays Zombie, a dread locked narcoleptic who finds himself in ridiculous situations. 2 years after the pilot, Pierce hung himself in a Las Vegas hotel. You will know Pierce from his role as Casper in Kids. Funny how the name Casper is shared in this film.
Araki labeled TIHTWE as “A Twin Peaks for MTV” I cannot agree with this statement anymore. Dancing midget Sugar-Ray fans turn into gun wielding robbers. Things that aren’t, are. A youthful acid trip for the new generation. I would like to imagine this series getting green lighted, but somehow, I think that it just passes over MTV’s head. Pure genius is always denied. Free with this Purchase (The Doom Generation – Uncut [Widescreen] DVD)
Superior to both Kids and Natural Born Killers, Gregg Araki’s The Doom Generation is a snarling satire that has the emotional range to prompt rage, fear, laughter, and grief in a viewer. Three L.A.-based, almost-twentysomethings–an incredibly foul-mouthed Valley Girl (Rose McGowan), her puppyish boyfriend (James Duval), and a sexy bad boy (Johnathon Schaech)–take to the road after a series of comic collisions with skinheads and gun-toting convenience-store clerks. While secret lawmen and voyeuristic TV cameras follow their movements, the fugitives gradually warm up to a three-way sexual relationship that wraps them in a profound, renewing innocence–an innocence then stolen by a wrathful America. Araki skewers the usual villains: the media, homophobes, gun nuts, Gen-X stereotypes. But there is so much more at stake here than meets the eye, an extraordinary anger and fear about predatory intolerance and purposelessness about the young.

Run
A scene-for-scene ripoff of Robert Rodriguez’ “El Mariachi”, but still very good. In fact, the director seems to have been inspired by the Mexico setting to shoot some very creative scenes. As in the original, a guitar player (Leon Lai) is traveling through Mexico and is mistaken for a hitman, and must hide out in a cantina owned by a woman (Veronica Yip in a fine performance) still mourning the loss of her brother. Unfortunately, the local kingpin who wants to kill the hitman is also pressuring the bar owner to marry him. With a superior plot and a more believable romance, this film is actually better than the original “El Mariachi”.

As the tension mounts, Floriana (Edwige Fenech of Strip nude for your killer) shows up and decides she’d like nothing more than to visit the two. As tension mounts between the three, tempers flair, and trust is about to be broken. It appears that the story is also loosely based on “The Black Cat” by Poe. This is allows for a fun little subplot that plays a huge role in the film later on, involving a black cat named “Satan”.

The Shooting - 1966 - NTSC - [Monte Hellman] (USA)
The Shooting, perhaps the most famous Western hardly anybody ever saw, takes deadpan survey of the fallout from a casual atrocity, or perhaps only a ludicrous accident, in a nameless town. We never see the atrocity/accident, or even the town. Word simply reaches a prospector’s camp, a wood-and-canvas pimple on the blankness of the wasteland, that someone “rode down a man and a little person… maybe a child.” Was the someone Willett Gashade’s brother Coin, who has gone missing? Was it Leland Drum, Coin’s companion, who gets shot from ambush at his fireside–perhaps by an unknown avenger, perhaps by Coin? The death of Drum explains the film’s title, but there’s a long list of things we never know in The Shooting, and most (all?) of the characters in the movie never know them either. Still, the small, relentlessly enigmatic cast of characters gets into motion and keeps moving–chasing something, running from something, headed for somewhere that may turn out to be nowhere, or deep inside themselves.
Monte Hellman made The Shooting (and a second movie, Ride in the Whirlwind) during one brief trip into the desert, anonymously financed by Roger Corman, in the summer of 1966. His material was a script by Adrien Joyce (later of Five Easy Pieces fame), the patient camera of Gregory Sandor, and the faces, voices, and brazenly modern presences of Warren Oates (Gashade), Jack Nicholson (a white-collar killer), and Millie Perkins (a pinched Medusa, freckled with trail dirt, bitchy light years from Anne Frank). Over the intervening decades the Beckettian movie has been sporadically available only on late-night TV or via scrappy 16-millimeter prints at film societies. That now triumphantly changes with this crisp, color-saturated DVD release, whose modest letterboxing eloquently enhances the unsettling power of Hellman’s compositions and eerie long takes

China 9, Liberty 37 (Remastered - Uncut) - 1978 - NTSC - [Monte Hellman] (USA)
China 9, Liberty 37 (Italian: Amore, piombo e furore) is an Italian-Spanish 1978 western film directed by Monte Hellman, starring Warren Oates, Jenny Agutter, and Fabio Testi.
Gunslinger Clayton Drumm (Testi) is about to be hanged when he is given a chance to live if he will agree to murder Matthew (Oates), a miner who has steadfastly refused to sell his land to the railroad company. Matthew’s refusal is a major obstacle to the railroad’s plans for expansion.
Although he naturally accepts the assignment, Clayton has become weary of killing and wants to try to build a new life for himself. The would-be killer and his potential victim meet and quickly become close friends. Matthew is married to the beautiful Catherine (Agutter), who greatly complicates matters by promptly falling in love with Clayton. Clayton, despite his growing loyalty to Matthew, gives in to lust and sleeps with his new friend’s wife. When Matthew discovers his wife’s infidelity, he becomes infuriated and beats her. She leaves him and runs off with Clayton. The enraged Matthew asks his mentally unstable brothers to help him track down his wife and her lover.
Meanwhile, the railroad hasn’t failed to notice that Clayton has not lived up to his part of the bargain. Consequently, they’ve changed their plans and now want everybody who gets in their way dead, including Clayton.

Love and Other Catastrophes - 1997 - NTSC - [Emma-Kate Croghan] (AU)
Australian college students struggle to deal with school, romance, and life in general in first-time director Emma-Kate Croghan’s comedy. The film’s focus falls on cinema studies major Mia (France O’Connor) and her roommate Alice (Alice Garner), both of whom find themselves in romantic flux. Alice is torn between the cocky Ari (Matthew Dyktynski) and the shy but loyal Michael (Matt Day), while Mia is in the midst of a messy break-up with her girlfriend Danni (Radha Mitchell). Further complicating Mia’s life are her unfinished thesis (on the feminist implications of Doris Day films) and her struggles with the college administration, which provide the opportunity for gentle satire of academia and the frustrations of bureaucracy. The characters deal with their troubles through articulate, questioning dialogue, and Croghan punctuates the film with title screens featuring famous quotes and with attempts to liven up the relatively familiar story with occasional forays into art-film stylization. Most critics viewed the film as a promising debut, with likable characters and a charming romantic tone, if an inconsequential narrative.

Ashes of Time (International Cut) - 1994 - NTSC - [Wong Kar Wai] (HK)
In this film, set in ancient times in China, Leslie Cheung plays an agent, Ouyang Feng, hiring famous bounty-hunters. His character is portrayed as a fallen swordsman driven by greed and heartless to both friend and foe. He was perpetually being spiteful of love as his own love history was not nearly so beautiful. His bounty-hunters came and went as was narrated by Ouyang Feng himself as based on the Tung Shu predictions.
In essence, he was a loner with little love, but the bounty hunters that worked for Ouyang Feng, like ‘Blind Swordsman’ (Tony Leung Chiu Wai) and another of his best fighters, Hung Chi (Jacky Cheung), discovered the intangible secret of true love while Ouyang retained his attitude towards his fighters and the precious lessons that they have taught. However, the thread that runs through the entire narrative has clearly the spirit of refusal in the sense that one should reject another before he gets to be rejected in the future. To illustrate, nearly every character in this story has resorted to being selfish and malignant in order to prevent being rejected by others, be it in love or in comradeship as their individual hardships have moulded their attitude turning them into heartless and cold individuals in order to survive in the uncompromising desert where the story is set
This is the International Cut of Ashes of Time,
this is the way the film was originally shown in Europe in 1994.
This is not the new Redux version that was just released in stores on DVD, nor is it sourced from the awful Hong Kong DVD that has been available for quite a few years now.

Don's Plum - 1996 - NTSC - [Leonardo Dicaprio] (USA)
Directed by R.D. Robb, the largely unreleased Don’s Plum made headlines throughout the late ’90s for featuring Leonardo DiCaprio, who, after scoring big with the success of Titanic, was enjoying the top spot on young Hollywood’s A-list.
The film stars DiCaprio and Tobey Maguire as two of several obnoxious rich kids whittling the night away at Don’s Plum, a local diner. Shot in black-and-white and largely improvised, the kids speak candidly about women, sex, drugs, and the nuances of relationships — if by “nuances” one means adultery, masturbation, bisexuality, and whatever shock-topics the moment may have called for. Maguire and DiCaprio claimed to have worked in Plum free of charge on the condition that it would not be made into a feature release, and promptly sued Robb for distribution rights after it was, indeed, stretched into a 90-minute film.
